James Shand is an experienced Virtual Finance Director and owns vfdnet, here he shares mistakes he wishes he’d been told to avoid when starting his portfolio finance career 18 years ago. Preparing a business for sale to Private Equity (PE)
“We used James as our Virtual Finance Director to assist with selling my company to a PE backed trade buyer. James’s experience on the sale and due diligence process was invaluable.
After his advice, we rejected the first offer made by the buyer. We then went on a ‘virtual due diligence process’, tidying up loose ends and discovering some significant issues that we were able to sort out before the buyer came back with a much better offer a year later.
Because of James, we were in much better shape to accept the second offer and start the due diligence process in earnest.
James experience and hard work was key to our eventual success in completing the process and completing the sale. He brought with him experienced legal and financial associates that ensured the process completed to everyone’s satisfaction.
I have no hesitation in recommending vfdnet to other business owners who want the best chance of converting an offer into the exit they deserve.”

Richard – Business Owner

“Peter is a first rate virtual finance director with excellent people skill and an ability to quickly see what is and isn’t working within the finance function and
the business generally and to help put it right. He is hands on and efficient in the projects he undertakes and always delivers on what has been agreed.
I would wholeheartedly recommend him to you.”

Steve Z – MD

“When I was Chairman I worked with our experienced Virtual Finance Director, David between 2012 and 2015, in one of the most difficult business environments for a software business. David was a key member of the team keeping everyone focused on delivering business and driving cashflow. Without David’s clear understanding of the issues, strategic thinking, willingness to address opportunities and problems head on, I believe the outcome would have been very different. David was the cornerstone of the management team.”
